Danielle on Impulse

What drew you to The Impulse Company and how did you find out about us?

It was serendipity really, the way I first met Scott Williams and the Impulse Company. I got accepted into a free MEAA Equity workshop in Sydney focused on Meisner work.

What had you struggled with before you began your training with us?

I had know idea what or who the Impulse Company was, let alone had heard of much Meisner technique. I had freshly graduated from drama school at the time and they did not prioritise to teach us impulse work. Although I loved drama school, I was fed on an intellectual dose of techniques with acting, that caused me to push a lot as an actor. It put me a lot in my head. I was so grateful to have been introduced to something that set my body and instincts free and helped set both my work and soul on fire. When I discovered this work, I actually thought to myself: “is it meant to feel this simple, truthful and freer?” And the answer is undoubtedly yes when you find a way to trust your impulses.

What impact has our work had on your craft? (please let us know who your teachers were whilst training with us!) Did we solve that problem?

The impact this work has had on my craft is endless. I’ve been with the Impulse company for almost 9 years now and I always go back to be unlocked some more. It teaches you to give up self consciousness, to put your attention on others in a pristine and truthful way, and humbles you right down to the core. It’s taught me so much in terming of unbecoming and being. I loved training both in class and privately with the two greats Kate Skinner, Erica Chestnut and Matt Minto. My favourite has been some of the Play in a Fortnight and Advanced courses where I got to tread the boards being taught by maestro Scott Williams. Niki Flacks’ “Acting with Passion” also changed my life! Pairing her work with Impulse was an ultimate powerhouse I now take with me to every film or show I do.

What stands out for you when you think about your time training with us?

What stands out is that it’s a class of zero ego and 100% generosity.

What do you wish people knew about us?

I wish more people knew about the Impulse Company and what a gift it is to the actor. There’s a beautiful, committed and dedicated community here in Australia with some of Australia’s best actors.
