We take a script + Impulse actors + 6 days of rehearsal and finish with an electric and connected sharing of the work in our ‘Not-a-Performance’ open showing.
Scott chooses a play based on the specific group enrolled in the course. You play as cast, making discoveries along the way, aided by the techniques we teach.
On the final day, you share those discoveries with an invited audience of your choice for 'Not-a-Performance.' There’s no obligation to be off-book, this is just a chance for an audience to see the incredible jump start this work gives a rehearsal process.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis - this means places are offered as applications come in. Apply quickly to secure a place. Applications close July 28th.
This course is suitable for actors who have previously completed Module 3, Advancing Impulse or had equivalent Meisner training with extensive text work.
If you are unsure, please contact us.
If you are new to the technique, you should begin with the Introduction to Impulse course.
“It was exciting to see the energy shoot through the scene, bringing to it an anything-might-happen vitality. Scott's enthusiasm, knowledge, experience and generosity of spirit made for a rewarding and inspiring time."
- Hilary Bell (Playwright, Wolf Lullaby)

Aside from Scott's mid-year annual visit, our regular classes are designed by him and taught by our Australian faculty who have trained with Scott as both actors and teachers. These are Sam Smith and Matt Minto in Sydney and Erica Chestnut in Melbourne. Regular classes include our Modules, Drop-Ins and, on occasion, play-in-a-month.
Once you have signed up and paid your deposit, you have access to all three modules at a time that suits you. Whilst most people tend to do their 3 modules one after the other, occasionally an actor may book a job, or life happens, and you need to put it on hold. Let us know that you need to defer, and when you would like to jump back in, and we will find a place for you.
Class sizes vary, but are unlikely to consist of more than 20 people. Between eight and 15 has been the average over the 20 years that we’ve been training actors.
Because the Technique is experiential, classes are practical and are, we believe, unique in the amount of personal tuition and feedback you’ll receive.
The majority of students will begin with Module 1, Living Truthfully. Even if you’ve done an introductory course with us, or elsewhere, it can only give you a flavour of what the Technique can deliver.
Students who have already have a significant body of experience with The Impulse Company may begin with either Module 2 – The Given Set of Circumstances – or Module 3 – A State of Aliveness, using it as a showcase opportunity, with Scott’s agreement.
Scott visits Australia annually, and teaches each of the courses himself. These are usually Introduction to Impulse, Advancing Impulse, Play-in-a-Fortnight and Advancing Impulse for Screen. Eve Morey joins us in Melbourne for the screen portion of the Advancing Impulse on Screen workshop.
